When listening to a Porter Robinson track, you’d find it hard to believe that something so polished and incredibly well produced came from someone who’s only 19 years old.
Prior to the release of his Spitfire EP – the first release on Skrillex’s recently formed label OWSLA – Porter Robinson was an electro house producer, however with this new release, he’s expanded his horizons and is now dabbling in not only electro, but dubstep and moombahton as well.
The same level of detail featured in his electro productions are carried over into other genres. While Robinson’s tracks usually emphasise a melody, there is always a substantial weighty grind to them as well. This is shown perfectly in Unison, where the juxtaposition of the catchy melody and the beefy, drill-like lead intermingle flawlessly.
Robinson also makes a foray into the realm of the current dance fad, moombahton. Though I’m not the biggest fan of moombahton, 100% In The Bitch is executed with proper Porter Robinson style and quality, which is a somewhat rare treat when sorting through the majority of moombahtoon, i.e. slowed down Afrojack tracks. Downlink also provides his vision of the track, where his trademark robot noises, though getting fairly stale in his dubstep, work surprisingly well for moombahton.
There really is something for everyone on the Spitfire EP, with a total of 11 tracks, including some hot remixes by SkiSM, Kill The Noise, Mikkas and one of the hottest names at the moment, Knife Party. Check out Beatport for previews of all the tracks.
