An Australian duo consisting of Dan Sieg and Sam Wilkinson have arrived at the scene hot in 2013. Although Dan & Sam have released a song in 2012 called Breaking the Illusion, I would still consider them newcomers, as they haven’t released anything else except for that in the entire year. Dan & Sam have started 2013 in full force under the Silk Music banner, and have already released songs that could be considered classics in the years to come.
First and foremost, we have to mention Dan & Sam remix of Innerspace by Gregory Esayan, as this is probably Dan & Sam’s most popular song and arguably the tune of 2013. This track is just perfect, the incomprehensible female vocals, the chimes, and the kicks come together to provide a relaxing, soothing song to chill to. Though I wouldn’t consider it overly danceable, as it’s hardly a banging club stormer, but rather a tune that you can listen to while studying, driving or even while drifting off to sleep if you are like me and enjoy listening to slow melodic music before bed.
Then, we have Walls, a Dan & Sam original production. Although I like Shawn Mitiska’s remix more, the original is a very pleasant experience. Walls is another real Progressive House tune (don’t let Beatport fool you!) with lovely vocals that really shine through, although this time they are sung by a male and much more comprehensible. The lyrics “The only walls we have, are the ones we built ourselves” are very thoughtful, and Maxx Hennard performs them beautifully. I feel like this song wouldn’t be complete without the vocals and that without them it would be bland and just another forgettable progressive house track.
An Interesting Dream – Dan & Sam’s latest release – has some differences from their earlier productions. It is a bit faster, louder and darker. However once the breakdown arrives, it comes back with a more happy and hopeful feeling. Nearing the end, however, the song goes back to it’s darker past and loses all semblance of its prior joy.
